The sanctions include individuals linked to the Houthis in China and Oman who sold them weapons through front companies.
The United States has imposed sanctions on two individuals and five entities that helped buy arms for Yemen’s Houthi rebels, targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This was reported by the press service of the US Department of Treasury on Monday, June 17.
The restrictions include Houthi-linked people in China and Oman who sell them weapons through front companies.
Also mentioned in the sanctions list is the Cameroon-flagged ship Otaria, operated by a UAE company and captained by Vyacheslav Salyga, which brought tens of millions of dollars worth of cargo to the Houthis at the end of May.
US Deputy Treasury Secretary Brian Nelson said the Houthis’ continued attacks on commercial shipping were made possible by access to key components needed to manufacture their missiles and drones.
It will be recalled that in February, the US Coast Guard intercepted a shipment of weapons from Iran in the Persian Gulf, to the Houthis in Yemen.
