There will be more Ukrainian language on TV – language ombudsman

In exactly one month, certain provisions of Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine On Media will come into force, designed to maximize the amount of Ukrainian content on television. This was reported by the press service of the State Language Protection Commissioner.

“From July 17, 2024, the requirements for the use of the state language on the air by Ukrainian-language programs are tightened: the use of a non-state language on the air is allowed only when using set expressions , short statements or individual words of the participants in the program to be broadcast live, except for the speech of the presenters (announcers) of the program, if the total duration of such sentences does not exceed 10% of the duration of the program, the interviews, comments, explanations, questions, individual speech, etc. in a non-state language will be translated into Ukrainian or dubbed or voiced into Ukrainian”, the message said.

The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremen believes that all this will contribute to the eradication from the regime’s television and radio broadcasts of the use of Ukrainian-Russian bilingualism, which, according to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, does not correspond to the constitutional. status of the Ukrainian language as the only state language and violates the rights of citizens to receive information and services in the state language.

It was previously reported that the Supreme Court recognized the mandatory nature of the new spelling. The Language Ombudsman insists on the need for widespread use of current spelling in all areas of life.
