Washington tried to involve Beijing in a military confrontation on the democratic island, the Chinese leader believes.
The United States tried to persuade China to attack Taiwan, but Beijing “didn’t get it.” Chinese President Xi Jinping announced this to the head of the European Commission, Ursulie von der Leyen, in April 2023, the FT reports, citing sources.
“According to people familiar with the situation, Xi Jinping told Ursulephon der Leyen that Washington is trying to push Beijing to attack Taiwan,” the publication said.
Xi Jinping stressed that China is “off the hook” because a conflict could destroy all of China’s achievements in recent years, the newspaper wrote.
As confirmation, the publication cited the words of former Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai, who at one of the conferences in Asia said that China “will not fall into the trap that someone might be preparing for us.”
According to the Financial Times’ source, Xi Jinping has also informed the country’s officials of US intentions.
Recall that Beijing considers the democratically-governed island its territory and is increasing military, political and economic pressure to assert rights there. The Chinese army periodically conducts exercises near Taiwan.
