The European Union did not agree to the 14th package of sanctions against Russia due to the fact that Germany did not satisfy the clause on the responsibility of European companies for violating the restrictions. The next discussion of the package of sanctions on Russia is scheduled for June 19. This was reported by Reuters in connection with European diplomats.
Officials from 27 EU countries have been discussing a package for more than a month that includes a ban on Russian LNG transshipment and a plan to hold EU operators accountable for sanctions violations by subsidiaries and partners in third countries.
The ambassadors were supposed to discuss and decide on this issue on the evening of June 14, but the topic of sanctions was removed from the agenda of the meeting at the last moment.
Hungary, Russia’s closest ally in the EU, appears ready to accept the sanctions package, which requires bloc unity. However, EU diplomats said Germany had expressed reservations about the impact on industry of its restrictions on subsidiaries and partners in third countries.
The EU also banned ships from its ports that contributed to the Russian military effort. This could include transporting goods that generate significant income for Russia, goods or technology used in the defense and security sector, or transporting fuel outside the G7 price cap system.
