This was reported on the page of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU on the social network X. They noted that the first intergovernmental conferences will be convened on June 25.
It is she who will give the official start to negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union.
On June 11, at a conference in Berlin, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU should begin before the end of June.
According to her, the reforms carried out by Ukraine are the basis for making Ukraine “an attractive platform for investment, for business,” as well as bringing it closer to the EU.
She also said that the first 1.5 billion euros of income from frozen Russian assets will be transferred to Ukraine in July. According to her, 10% will go to reconstruction and restoration, and a large percentage will go to defense. In addition, in June Ukraine will receive 1.9 billion under the Ukraine Facility program.
To start negotiations, the consent of all 27 participating countries is needed, and this is what has become a problem, because Hungary ignores requests from the European Commission regarding the start of negotiations and does not give a clear answer whether the Hungarian parliamentarians are for or against.
At the same time, diplomats from Budapest emphasize that countries in the southern Balkans, such as Serbia and Albania, also deserve to be EU members. Both countries received accession candidate status in 2012 and 2014, respectively.
Such actions on the part of Hungarian officials can be explained by the fact that Hungary will preside over the EU from July 1, and will have more leverage over the negotiation process and will probably try to extract as many benefits from it as possible.
Let us recall that Ukraine and Moldova received candidate status for accession to the EU in the summer of 2022 and since then have been taking all the necessary steps to begin accession negotiations.
