The corresponding agreement was reached by Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban and Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg. At the meeting, officials reconsidered relations between Hungary and NATO. Orban stated this at a press conference with Stoltenberg in Budapest, as reported by the Hungarian publications 24.hu and RTL.
Hungary has made it clear that it does not intend to block any decisions within NATO that may differ from what we believe is our analysis of the situation. What we focused on in today’s meeting… is that any operations outside (NATO) must be voluntary, and Hungary has been given the guarantees that it requires,” he said.
The head of the Hungarian government added that such an agreement meets the request of Hungarian society, which, during the elections to the European Parliament, “gave the government a mandate not to take part in the war.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that Hungary will not participate and will not oppose NATO initiatives to support Ukraine, which must be agreed upon at the Alliance summit in Washington.
At the summit, I expect allies to agree on NATO’s leading role in coordinating and providing security and training for Ukraine. I also expect the allies to agree on long-term financial commitments to provide military support, he said.
Let us recall that the day before it became known that the Bucharest Nine, an association of countries on the eastern flank of NATO, was considering the possibility of expelling Hungary from its membership for its position towards Ukraine.
