The results suggest the vote failed to resolve Bulgaria’s long-running political crisis.
In Bulgaria, former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s GERB party won early parliamentary elections. Novinite reported this on Monday, June 10.
According to the Central Election Commission’s provisional data, after processing 50.96% of the protocols, seven parties and coalitions can enter the next convocation of parliament.
COAT OF ARMS Boyko Borisova scored 23.47% and is noticeably ahead of her opponents. In second place is the reformist coalition Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (PI-DB), former partner of GERB in the coalition government – 15.37%.
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) is now in third place with 15.14%. The DPS traditionally represents the Turkish and Muslim populations, but is now led for the first time by ethnic Bulgarian Delyan Peevski.
The pro-Russian Renaissance Party got 14.52%, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) – 6.89%, and Some Such People – 6.45%.
In Sunday’s vote, Boyko Borisov expressed doubt that any party or coalition would be able to form a new government in accordance with the preliminary results of the vote.
According to him, it is unlikely that his GERB party will have enough seats in parliament to form a government with any potential partners, as well as the opposition among its allies.
Boyko Borissov has led three governments in the past 10 years, but his support has fallen amid allegations of corruption, links to oligarchs and attacks on media freedom.
Borisov’s party is also leading in the European Parliament elections held on the same day on Sunday.
As you know, these are six Bulgarian parliamentary elections in four years. Voting took place in April 2021, July 2021, November 2021, October 2022 and April 2023.
Let’s recall that in April 2024, a provisional government was appointed in Bulgaria, headed by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev. At the same time, President Rumen Radev set early parliamentary elections for June 9.
Earlier, on March 28, it became known that in Bulgaria there were people who refused to form a government and returned the mandate to President Radev.
