The “Super Sunday” of European Parliament elections began in the European Union, which will determine who exactly will shape EU policy for the next five years. European Truth wrote this on Sunday, June 9.
Voting began in several EU countries on Thursday. Today, voters go to polling stations in 21 EU states, including France and Germany, which will send the largest number of representatives to the European Parliament: 81 and 96, respectively.
Voting is also taking place today in Poland, Spain, Italy (second day), Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Sweden.
In the past, voting has taken place in the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Latvia, Slovakia and Malta.
In total, more than 370 million European citizens have the right to vote in the 27 EU states to elect 720 members of the European Parliament.
It is expected that at approximately 21:30 Kyiv time the results of the EU-wide exit poll will be announced, and the first preliminary results will be released after midnight.
Polls predict the Liberals and Greens will lose seats. This would reduce the majority of center-right and center-left parties in the European Parliament and complicate efforts to deepen European integration.
The far right could strengthen its position compared to the results of the last European elections in 2019.
The center-right and pro-Ukrainian European People’s Party is expected to remain the largest group in the European Parliament. Her candidate, Ursula von der Leyen from Germany, will try to be re-elected as President of the European Commission, but it is not guaranteed that she will succeed.
before Correspondent.net discussed in detail why the elections to the European Parliament are important and how their results may affect the level of European aid to Ukraine.
