The United States is ready to discuss arms control with China and Russia “without conditions.” However, Beijing and Moscow reject these proposals.
The Biden administration is set to take a more aggressive approach to nuclear weapons after China and Russia rejected US efforts to discuss arms control issues together. Semafor wrote this on Thursday, June 6.
It indicated that the United States considers it necessary to “adopt a more competitive approach to non-proliferation and arms control” in the context of growing world tensions and “make some adjustments to our position and capabilities.”
At the same time, White House senior director for arms control Pranay Vaddi said the Administration still hopes to bring its geopolitical rivals to the negotiating table, but wants to show that failure to negotiate will have of the consequences, the official added.
“Russia and China will face a worsening security environment if they continue to refuse to negotiate,” he said.
The administration’s tougher thinking is reflected in decisions to develop a new nuclear gravity bomb and efforts to extend the life of some Ohio-class nuclear submarines, the newspaper wrote.
The administration is also considering further development of US nuclear forces in the face of growing nuclear threats and is working to provide key allies with the long-range strike and surveillance capabilities necessary to protect themselves.
As you know, Russia will conduct exercises with nuclear weapons. This was in response to “provocative statements and threats by some Western officials against the Russian Federation,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said.
