The approved amendments to the law on universal conscription and military service in Lithuania suggest that military service will be conscripted between the ages of 18 and 22, that is, after leaving school. Lithuanian youth will not be able to enter university until they complete their military service.
Another innovation concerns different service life periods. Lithuanian conscripts will be conscripted for nine months, but depending on the needs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, this period can be reduced to six months.
At the same time, university graduates with specialties that are not in the army or are not taught – for example, avionics specialists, engineers, and doctors will be called up for three months for basic military training. They are expected to become part of the active reserve in case of crisis situations.
Changes to the law will come into force in 2026.
Earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius wanted to return to military service in the Bundeswehr, but party members from the SDP did not support such intentions of their colleague. Returning to military service in Germany will require a constitutional majority in parliament.
Even earlier, the German Ministry of Defense analyzed the Swedish model, where about 10% of graduates are drafted. The Bundeswehr’s current problem is the lack of barracks, which limits the possibilities of potential conscription.
