Former West Virginia lawmaker Derrick Evans was sentenced to three months in prison for participating in the attack on the U.S. Capitol last year.
Evans was joining a live crowd of Donald Trump supporters when several people entered the building and then opened the doors of the Rotunda to other people.
He shouted “Trump”, “The door slammed” and “This is it!”
“We’re in! Derrick Evans is in the Capitol!” Said at once reaching for the door.
Evans later deleted the video, but it was obvious in the case against him. After the first pleaded not guilty, he defended himself by saying “he did not commit a crime” and Evans pleaded guilty.
He told Judge Roy Lambert that he assumed his actions as he sat next to a large photo of Evans’ family. According to NBC News. According to reports, Lambert asked Evans to succeed and told him he was considering Evans blinds at 6 months. Evans’ attorney requested no custody.
“I don’t want trouble in the next election,” Lambert added.
During the riots, a father of four was recently elected to the West Virginia House of Representatives. Three days later, he was forced to resign.
After publishing a very short statement of resignation, Evans released a second slightly longer statement in which he expressed regret. Writing “I assume full responsibility for my actions and deeply regret any pain, illness or embarrassment I may have caused to my family, friends, constituents and the people of West Virginia.
