Children are dying and injured because of the war started by Russia. And because of the indiscriminate attacks, they spent thousands of hours in bomb shelters.
More than 600 young Ukrainians have died and more than 1,420 have been injured since Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine began. However, the real numbers are likely to be higher, the UN Office in Ukraine said in a statement released on International Children’s Day.
Children spend endless hours in bomb shelters because of indiscriminate attacks. In the two years after the start of the mass invasion, children from front-line settlements spent 3,000 to 5,000 hours in bomb shelters, that is, 4-7 months, causing stress and seriously worsening their life. Forced removal increases the risks children face, including experiencing family separation, and facing increased risks of trafficking, exploitation and violence, which in turn leads to significant stress and psychological trauma,” said the statement.
It was also reported that the United Nations, together with its partners, continues to help children in Ukraine. Thus, by 2023, the UN provided life-saving primary health care to more than 5.1 million children and mothers, and educational services to more than 2.5 million children and teachers.
Let’s remember that in April UNICEF announced a sharp increase in the number of Ukrainian children killed because of the war.
