Russia does not adhere to international conventions that determine priorities for exchanges.
All those who returned from captivity in Russia today spoke of torture. About a third of them were injured and seriously injured. This is what Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets said in a telethon on Friday, May 31.
According to him, the prisoners reported that they did not see any representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“About a third were injured and seriously injured. And really everyone lost an incredible amount of kilos. Everyone was in a very poor physical condition, everyone needed treatment and rehabilitation. We can say about everyone that they are all psychologically stable and everyone was happy when they saw that the exchange took place,” said the Ombudsman.
Lubinets stressed that Russia does not comply with international conventions that define priorities during exchanges.
The priorities for such exchanges, as defined by international conventions, suggest that the seriously wounded and women are returned first, then other categories.
“There should be some rules… But there are no answers from the Russian side, except that we will think about it, we will accept them, then, without explanation, they remove 99% of people from the lists that we submitted. and say: if you want, take them, If you don’t want, don’t take Ukraine never took an ultimatum position.
We remind you that today Ukraine returned 75 citizens from Russian captivity, including 71 military personnel. In total, 3,210 Ukrainians returned from captivity.
