Russian propaganda distorted the chancellor’s words, which were spoken before the big war in Ukraine, the German government said.
German authorities deny information that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a statement about “Ukraine not joining NATO in the next 30 years.” The Russian-language edition of the German publication BILD reported this on its Telegram channel on Monday, May 27.
On Sunday, Olaf Scholz spoke to Berlin residents and spoke about the negotiations with Vladimir Putin, which took place 10 days before the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine.
“By the way, then he called Ukraine’s supposed entry into NATO one of the reasons for starting a war, I told him: “You know what (NATO’s) decision is: nothing like this expected in the near future. Apparently, in the next 30 years as well.” I said the same thing in the public space,” the chancellor said during his speech.
However, Russian propaganda twisted the words he said and began to present them as “proof” that Ukraine “will not be accepted into NATO.”
The representative of the German government, Steffen Hebestreit, at the request of the media, commented on what the head of the German government said. In particular, according to him, in fact, after the Russian attack on Ukraine, the German authorities announced a “sharp turn” (Zeitenwende) and changed their foreign policy significantly.
“The situation has changed dramatically. Therefore, we are not talking about any ’30 years’. This was (said – ed.) before Russia invaded Ukraine,” the official said.
Earlier, Olaf Scholz said that he was against the use of weapons supplied to Ukraine for an attack on the territory of the Russian Federation.
