About 20 thousand prisoners and those in pre-trial detention centers have the opportunity to join the Defense Forces, the Minister of Justice said.
In Ukraine, about 350 prisoners received parole for mobilizing the army. Justice Minister Denis Maluska announced this in an interview with The New York Times.
He said the courts are already considering most of the 4,300 such applications.
According to him, about 20 thousand prisoners and those in pre-trial detention centers have the opportunity to join the Defense Forces.
Maluska added that even a person convicted of a murder would not be subject to additional punishment for mobilizing the army if his crime was not serious, for example, sexual violence.
The minister also suggested that many prisoners are undecided and want to see first the results of the mobilization of the first wave of prisoners released for this purpose.
They want to know what the quality of the training is, whether the ex-prisoners are happy, and whether they are being treated well. This will be the key,” the minister believes.
We remind you that President Vladimir Zelensky signed a law on the mobilization of prisoners. The law provides conditional early release from serving the sentence for prisoners who decide to sign a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In Khmelnitsky, 50 prisoners who expressed a desire to mobilize have been released.
