The restrictions apply both to Russians with visas issued by Norway and to visas issued by other Schengen countries.
The Norwegian authorities have introduced new restrictions on the entry of Russian citizens into the country, which will take effect on May 29. This was announced by the Norwegian government on Thursday, May 23.
Thus, Russian citizens whose purpose is tourism and other non-essential travel will be denied entry to the border. The restrictions apply both to Russians holding visas issued by Norway before the restriction of visa practices in the spring of 2022, and to visas issued by other Schengen countries.
“The change suggests that the police may deny entry to Russian citizens subject to instructions,” the statement said.
However, exceptions will only be granted in certain cases, for example for visiting close relatives (parents, spouses, housemates and children) living in Norway, as well as for Russian citizens who will work or students in Norway or other Schengen countries.
It was also noted that the Norwegian authorities are closely monitoring the border and border traffic in Storskog (the border crossing between Norway and the Russian Federation – ed.) and will take measures if necessary.
“The decision to strengthen entry rules is in line with the Norwegian strategy of supporting allies and partners in responding to Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine,” said Norwegian Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl.
It is known that the Norwegian government will limit visa practices for Russians in the spring of 2022. After that, tourist visas for Russians are generally not issued. But after the changes, which will come into effect from May 29, entry options will now be more limited.
We remind you that Norway has introduced a ban on the entry into the country of vehicles with Russian license plates from October 3, 2023.
And in April 2022, Norway closed its borders and ports to Russian trucks and ships. The country joined EU sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
