The ASMPA upgrade program boosted the missile’s internal performance while maintaining confidence in the onboard nuclear component.
The first successful test launch of the modern ASMPA-R medium-range strategic air-to-ground missile took place in France: it is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The French Ministry of Defense reported this on Wednesday, May 22.
“The ASMPA upgrade program strengthened the internal characteristics of the missile while maintaining confidence in the onboard nuclear component in the face of new threats with the emergence of a future 4th generation nuclear air-to-surface missile,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The tests were conducted as part of the Durandal military exercises, which will take place from May 13 to June 14. They took place under military control at the bases in Biscarrosse, Hourtin and Quimper on the west coast of France in the Bay of Biscay.
“Operation Durandal: The Strategic Air Force’s Rafale successfully conducted the first test launch of ASMPA’s updated supersonic nuclear missile without an on-board payload,” French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu reported on X (formerly Twitter ).
The new generation ASN4G rocket is planned to appear in 2035.
The United States and Japan are jointly developing a new missile capable of intercepting hypersonic weapons.
