Republicans have accused the Biden administration of bypassing lawmakers to send tens of millions of dollars in military equipment to Kenyan troops deployed in Haiti. So how can it be transferred to Ukraine, reports Politico
House Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Michael McCall (R-Texas) and Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Jim Risch (R-Idaho) in a letter to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized the administration for its use of the presidential $60 million in military aid to Haiti to suppress gangs. The issue concerns rifles, ammunition and armored vehicles for Kenyan troops en route to the island.
The letter from the lawmakers states that the US administration is rushing to fund an unspecified and open operation in Haiti without congressional approval.
The media notes that there is growing concern in Congress that American support for Haiti may “cost” Ukraine.
The State Department said the United States is “responding to many critical needs around the world, and the scenarios in Ukraine and Haiti are different.”
“Supporting the people of Haiti does not limit or take away from us the opportunity to support the people of Ukraine. Both priorities are important, and in each case we determine the support taking into account the needs of our partners,” assured the officer, wishing to remain anonymous.
As is known, hundreds of prisoners escaped from a prison in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Among the fugitives are men convicted of killing the country’s President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
