The United States could sign a massive package of economic and security support for Georgia.
The US Congress may consider a military and trade aid package for Georgia if the country abandons anti-Western rhetoric and respects human rights. Politico wrote this on Monday, May 20, in relation to the draft law of the Republican Congressman from South Carolina, Joe Wilson.
In particular, the United States is ready to provide Georgia with preferential trade treatment, improved access to American markets, visa liberalization and a package of military support. In addition, the bill provides military assistance for security and defense, which, as the publication writes, “is ideal for defending the territory against Russian aggression.”
Both bills provide for tough penalties against politicians from the ruling Georgian Dream and their families unless their law on so-called “foreign agents,” the Russian equivalent, is repealed.
“The package will be granted if the Georgian authorities demonstrate significant and sustainable progress in reviving their democracy,” the document said.
The bill could be submitted to Congress this week (May 20-26).
Let’s recall that on May 14, the Georgian parliament finally adopted a bill on the transparency of foreign influence, which led to mass protests.
Part of the opposition in the Georgian parliament announced the transition to boycott mode after the adoption of the law on “foreign agents.”
