Currently, American forces are limited to a base in Niamey, where Russian military personnel have already begun to deploy.
The United States has reached an agreement with Niger to withdraw its armed forces from the country by September 15, CNN reported.
The United States has four months to withdraw fewer than 1,000 troops as well as their equipment, including MQ-9 Reaper drones.
US and Niger officials said they would continue to work together in areas of “common interest.”
The US Department of Defense has been working with the Nigerian military for more than a decade, focusing on its counter-terrorism efforts in West Africa.
In the past, the US operated from two bases – Agadez and Niamey, which allowed the Pentagon to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance missions using drones. Currently, American forces are limited to a base in the capital Niamey, where Russian troops have already begun to deploy.
Russian air defense system, weapons and military instructors have arrived in Niger for training.
It will be recalled that in March, the military government of Niger announced that it terminated an agreement with the United States that allowed military and civilian Pentagon personnel to be deployed in the country.
Along with the impending withdrawal from Niger, American troops also left Chad. While French troops were withdrawn from Mali and Burkina Faso.
