Years of sanctions have taken a toll on the safety of Iranian aviation.

Iranian media do not suggest that outside forces were involved in the disaster, and note only that the disaster occurred in very bad weather.

But President Ibrahim Raisi had many enemies and there will be many people who will be very glad he is dead, wrote Jeremy Bowen, international editor of BBC News.

In the 1980s, he effectively signed the death warrants of thousands of dissidents, mostly leftists.

He has served as president since 2021 and during his tenure has been involved in a massive crackdown on people inside Iran. Besides, he was considered the successor to the supreme leader, and a plane crash was a good way to eliminate a rival from the road. But we have no evidence of this.

In Iran, it is customary to blame Israel for everything. But Israeli officials say Tel Aviv is not involved in any way, and it is unclear how Israel would benefit from such an intervention, which could obviously be seen as a provocative, hostile move.

Due to years of sanctions, Iranian aviation is very dangerous as new parts or aircraft are not supplied to the country.

In 1990, I was reporting on a major earthquake in Iran near where Raise died. I was in a pre-revolutionary American helicopter that had to make an emergency landing because one of the engines failed due to poor maintenance. A few weeks later I was informed that the helicopter had indeed crashed and all on board had died,” Bowen wrote.

The death of Iranian President Raisi will have serious consequences for the succession of the country’s supreme leader, analysts at the American Institute for the Study of War said. He was considered one of the main contenders for this post.

However, Raisi’s death will ultimately not change the regime’s current trajectory towards tougher, more conservative domestic policies and more aggressive regional policies, the analysis said.

According to Iran’s constitution, First Vice President Mokhber will serve as interim president. Special elections must be held no later than 50 days later.

Let us remind you that on May 19, Iranian President Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash. He has served as head of state since 2021, with many seeing the 63-year-old Rais as the future successor to the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
