A bill calling for the return of asylum seekers to Russia will be submitted to parliament next week.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said it is possible to try to partially open the Finnish border with the Russian Federation when the “expulsion law” is adopted. He said this in an interview with Yle Radio Suomi.
According to Orpo, according to intelligence, Russia’s policy has not changed and the border situation remains unchanged. Despite the fact that there has been no increase in illegal border connections since the arrival of spring, in Russia, near the borders of Finland, thousands of people are still waiting to cross the Finnish border.
“There is every reason to believe that if we open the border crossing, people will almost certainly come there,” said the Prime Minister of Finland.
A bill calling for the return of asylum seekers to Russia will be submitted to parliament next week.
“When the law is adopted, we will carefully try to open the border when we have it in our arsenal, then, through thinking and discussion, we can try to open traffic across the border,” said Orpo.
He added that Finland has a desire to normalize the situation, but everything depends on Russia.
“We can try to start at a border point. And if cooperation is established on both sides of the border, it will allow others to be opened,” said the Finnish Prime Minister.
We remind you that the Finnish government has decided to extend the closure of the border with Russia for another two months – until April 14.
The Finnish government later decided that land border crossings between Finland and Russia would not be opened on April 14, when the current closure ended. The border will remain closed until another decision is made.
