State television reported that the incident took place near the town of Jolfa, on the border with Azerbaijan, about 600 km northwest of Iran’s capital Tehran.
A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered a “brutal landing” on Sunday, Iranian state television reported.
Raisi was traveling in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan. The incident took place near the town of Jolfa, on the border with Azerbaijan, about 600 km northwest of Iran’s capital Tehran.
Rescuers tried to reach the scene but were hampered by bad weather conditions in the area, state television said. Heavy rain and wind were reported.
Raisi was in Azerbaijan on Sunday morning, where he and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated the dam. This dam is the third one built by the two countries on the Aras River.
Iran operates a variety of helicopters domestically, but international sanctions have made it difficult to obtain spare parts for them. Its air force predates the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
It can be remembered that according to the American Institute of Science and International Security (ISIS), Iran has enough enriched uranium to produce its first nuclear weapon within a week and a total of six bombs within a month.
