Moscow demands from Washington to prevent the recruitment and sending of US citizens to armed conflict in UkraineRussian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today, threatening “unpredictable consequences” for relations between Russia and USA
According to a Russian diplomat, the recruitment process is handled by the Ukrainian embassy in the United States, which will take place with the approval of the US authorities in Washington.
“We strongly demand that the American side stop such activities of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission,” the statement says.
According to Zakharova, the recruitment of mercenaries by the Ukrainian embassy “not only creates a direct danger to the life and safety of US citizens and openly contradicts their diplomatic status, but also threatens with unpredictable and serious international consequences.”
A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman indicated that these recruiting efforts are “with the collusion of the White House and US intelligence agencies” and are aimed at sending US citizens to fight in Ukraine and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
“This is the activity of the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, contrary to the Vienna Convention of 1961 on diplomatic relations, with the aim of openly recruiting fighters from the so-called Foreign Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine,” he said.
For Zayarova, this is a sign that “Washington is not interested in resolving the Ukrainian conflict, but, on the contrary, is trying to stir it up, focusing on the strategic defeat of Russia.”
They will not be treated like prisoners of war.
Russia has repeatedly condemned the presence of foreign fighters in Ukraine and warned that they would not be treated as prisoners of war if they were captured.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported in mid-June that Russian troops had killed 1,956 mercenaries in Ukraine out of 6,956 foreign fighters who fought on the side of Ukrainian forces.
The representative of the military organization, Igor Konashenkov, indicated that most of these combatants were Poles, but also assured that many were from Romania and the UK.
The Russian command reported that 601 Canadians and 530 Americans arrived in Ukraine from across the ocean.
Russian separatists have already sentenced to death three foreign fighters, two British and one Moroccan, and are threatening to sentence others to death, including two Americans. (EFE)
