According to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense, at least 16 retired military personnel have died in Ukraine.
Sri Lanka will send a high-level delegation to Russia to investigate hundreds of its citizens fighting the war against Ukraine. Reuters wrote this on Thursday, May 16.
This delegation included Sri Lankan Defense Minister Kamal Gunaratne and the former Russian ambassador.
It is indicated that the Russians on the island mainly recruited ex-military personnel into their army. They were promised high salaries and citizenship.
“The main difficulty is to determine the exact number of such people in Russia. Unofficial data suggests that there are about 600-800 Sri Lankans in Russia,” the agency wrote.
Sri Lankan authorities have already received 288 complaints from family members of citizens who illegally went to fight in Ukraine, and detained seven people linked to the recruitment of men. At least 16 retired military personnel have died in the war against Ukraine.
It was earlier reported that Russia recruited around 15 thousand Nepalese into its ranks, offering them $2,000 for their service.
The Russians, trying to capture Chasov Yar in the Donetsk region, sent foreign mercenaries there to attack. And the Ukrainian Armed Forces caught some citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka there.
