Helsinki Commission: The United States should encourage Ukraine to invade Russian territory

The commission created by the US Congress believes that the policies of the White House seriously undermine Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against a Russian offensive.

The United States should allow Ukraine to attack Russian forces in border areas of the Russian Federation with American weapons. These forces support the offensive in the Kharkov region, in particular, with fire on the territory of Ukraine. The US Helsinki Commission announced this on Wednesday, May 15, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Helsinki Commission is a non-governmental organization created by the US Congress in 1975 to monitor and promote compliance with the Helsinki Accords and other OSCE commitments. It was attended by congressmen, senators, political, military and security experts.

The commission said the United States should “not only allow, but also encourage” Ukrainian forces to strike Russian troops deployed and firing from Russia’s borders as part of offensive operations in the northern region of Kharkiv.

ISW emphasizes that Ukrainian strikes against Russian forces directly supporting offensive ground operations in the north of the Kharkov region will be defensive in nature, and it would be incorrect to characterize such actions as an “offensive.”

ISW analysts assert that the US restriction of Ukraine’s ability to strike military targets in Russia has created a safe haven in the border areas of the Russian Federation, from which Russian aircraft can launch the planned bombing and missile attacks on Ukrainian positions and populated areas. Also, in these shelters, the forces of the occupying forces freely gathered before being transferred to the territory of Ukraine.

“This US policy seriously undermines Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russia’s offensive operations in the northern Kharkiv region,” the Institute report said.

A day before it was reported that a group of Ukrainian people’s representatives arrived in Washington to try to get permission from the US authorities to attack with American weapons on Russian territory.

Earlier, the UK said that Kyiv has the right to use weapons provided by London to strike targets on Russian territory, as Moscow is attacking Ukrainian territory. After that, the Kremlin complained of “direct escalation.”
