In March of this year, a 62-year-old patient was transplanted with a genetically modified pig kidney, and two weeks later doctors discharged him from the hospital.
The first patient to receive a genetically modified pig kidney died about two months after the operation. Associated Press reports.
It is known that Richard Sleiman underwent a transplant in a hospital in Massachusetts in March at the age of 62. Then the surgeons said that, in their opinion, the pork kidney would last him at least two years.
The hospital’s transplant team said it was deeply saddened by the man’s death and expressed its condolences to his family. At the same time, doctors added that there was no indication that death occurred as a result of the transplant.
In a statement, Sleiman’s family thanked the doctors.
“Their tremendous efforts in performing the xenotransplantation gave our family seven weeks with Rick, and the memories made during this time will live on in our minds and hearts,” the statement said.
Sleiman’s family also added that he underwent surgery to give hope to thousands of people who desperately need a transplant.
It was previously reported that 58-year-old Lawrence Fawcett died in the United States six weeks after the operation. He is the second patient in the world to receive a pig heart transplant.
