Greece and Turkey have long-standing disputes and conflicts, from the divided island of Cyprus to oil and gas exploration rights in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.
A Greek appeals court has sentenced a former Turkish consulate employee to five years in prison on espionage charges. Reuters reported this on Friday, May 10.
It is indicated that we are talking about a Greek citizen who worked at the Turkish consulate on the island of Rhodes.
He was arrested in 2020 after it was reported that he was photographing Greek warships in the Aegean Sea.
The man did not admit his guilt, and the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the arrest, saying that in this way the rights of the then consular official were violated.
As Reuters notes, another Greek, who worked as a cook on a passenger ship sailing the Rhodes-Kastellorizo line, was convicted of espionage.
The ferry cook, as mentioned, at the direction of the diplomatic officer, photographed the ships passing between Rhodes and Kastellorizo, and he also photographed the military installations.
A similar case was filed against him and he was found guilty.
Journalists added that both those convicted were Greek Muslims.
It was previously reported that in the Polish city of Gdansk, a district court sentenced a Russian man accused of espionage to two and a half years in prison. The convicted Russian, who is legally in Poland, spied for seven years and acted under the guise of business.
