The Secretary-General of the Alliance emphasized that one of the reasons why the Russian invaders have been able to advance in recent months is “that we have not fulfilled what we promised.”
NATO does not intend to use its troops on the territory of Ukraine, but Kyiv did not request it, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. His words on Wednesday, May 8, were quoted by ANSA.
Stoltenberg noted that during his visit to Kyiv he did not hear calls for the deployment of NATO military personnel. The point is for the Alliance to increase support for Ukraine by providing more weapons.
“I visited Kyiv last week and they told me about the challenges they face: Russia has gained land and there is a risk that it will take more territory. It is not a large area, but to stop all this so that the Ukrainians can defend themselves, they need to send ammunition, they need weapons,” emphasized the NATO Secretary General.
Stoltenberg added that one of the reasons why the Russian invaders have been able to advance and gain more territory in recent months is “that we have not delivered what we promised.”
According to him, it took the United States six months to agree on a new aid package to Ukraine or the issue of the promised million shells from Europe – much less was transferred to the Ukrainian side.
At the same time, Stoltenberg said that “now everything is changing.”
We remind you that NATO member countries are planning to approve a declaration refusing to send troops to Ukraine. One of the main provisions of the project is “no boots on the ground.”
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron was the first to speak about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. The other day, he said he considered Russia’s nervous reaction to his remarks about the possible deployment of Western troops to Ukraine as evidence that this idea was working.
