In the event of a full-scale IDF offensive on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, the United States will not provide the Israelis with weapons that could be used in such an operation. US President Joe Biden announced this on Wednesday, May 8, in an interview with CNN.
“I’ve made it clear that if they enter Rafah — and they haven’t entered Rafah — if they enter Rafah, I’m not going to provide weapons that have been used historically for urban operations,” Biden said.
He acknowledged that Israeli use of American weapons in the Gaza Strip has resulted in civilian deaths.
CNN explained that the president is under “extraordinary” pressure – especially from members of his own party – to limit arms supplies amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
So far, Biden has resisted these calls and strongly supported Israel’s efforts to fight Hamas. However, the threat of invading Rafah seems to have changed his mind.
At the same time, Biden said that the United States will continue to provide Israel with defense weapons, especially for the Iron Dome air defense system.
