Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene tried to remove a party member from the position of speaker, but her initiative did not find enough support among either Republicans or Democrats.
The US House of Representatives on Wednesday, May 8, voted against Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene’s proposal to impeach her party member, Speaker Mike Johnson, Reuters reports.
It was noted that 359 congressmen voted to keep Johnson as speaker, and 43 voted for his resignation.
Democrats joined Republicans in the vote, Reuters explained, to avoid a repeat of the “chaos” that occurred in October when Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy, Johnson’s predecessor.
Reuters noted that the resignation attempt was a “rare Republican challenge to presidential candidate Donald Trump,” who on Wednesday said it was “not the time” for the party to try to oust its own speaker.
“I appreciate my colleagues showing confidence in defeating this misguided effort,” Johnson said after the vote.
Greene criticized Johnson for a series of compromises with Democrats who hold the Senate majority. Johnson angered many hardline Republicans this year by introducing bipartisan funding measures to avoid a government shutdown and aid US allies, particularly Ukraine.
Let’s remember that on March 22, Greene filed a resolution to remove Speaker Mike Johnson. His decision was criticized by other Republicans as threatening to split the warring Republican Party ahead of the election.
In April, Johnson met with Greene, but they disagreed on some political issues, particularly aid to Ukraine.
