GfdS linguists have been publishing a list of the most commonly used names since 1977. To do this, they evaluate data from about 750 registry offices.
Over the past six years, the name of the prophet has been in the lead in Berlin for the fifth time, as summarized by the German Language Society (GfdS). In 2021 alone, Noah was in first position.
In 2023, Noah is in second place, followed by Adam, Louis, Liam, Leon, Mateo, Luca, Emil and Oscar. The list of girl names is headed by Sophia, Emilia is in second place, and Charlotte and Mila share third place. Also popular in the future are the following names: Emma, Hannah, Mia, Clara, Lina and Matilda.
In the German name ranking last year, the most popular names were Noah and Sophia.
Among girls, Emilia took second place – previously this name had taken first place for three years in a row. Emma took third place. Among the guys, Noah has been in first place since 2019. Last year he was followed by Matteo (different spellings) and Leon.
In Hamburg last year, the most popular names for newborns were Emilia and Mohammed (with different spellings). Sofia and Emma are also popular names for girls. Parents often called the boys Henry and Liam. In 2022, Emma and Noah came out on top in Hamburg.
