The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, spoke about this.
Denmark has set an example by starting the path of direct investment in the Ukrainian defense industry. This is the path to follow. Purchasing equipment from Ukrainian companies or from European-Ukrainian joint ventures set up in Ukraine is an option that we will explore together with member states, EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said at the EU-Ukraine Defense Industry Forum on Monday.
If the equipment that Ukraine needs can be quickly manufactured by the Ukrainian defense industry, then I will say – let’s buy from them. Let’s help them produce (equipment) at home,” European Truth quotes Borrell.
Let us recall that at the beginning of spring, the European Commission presented the first ever European Defense Industrial Strategy at the EU level, involving the close involvement of Ukraine.
On March 5, the European Commission presented a new defense-industrial strategy, which should transfer the EU economy to a military footing and closely integrate Ukraine into it
As part of the new strategy, the EU should open a defense innovation office in Kyiv.
The European Commission also proposes to switch to joint production and procurement within the union. Now in the EU there are too many types of the same weapons, unlike in the United States, says EC Vice President Margrethe Vestager.
According to the new strategy, by 2030 the EU must spend at least 50% of its defense budget within the union and 60% by 2035.
From the start of the war to June 2023, member countries spent more than €100 billion on defense procurement. About 80% of this is spent outside the European Union, with the US alone accounting for more than 60% of spending. This cannot continue,” Vestager said.
