The head of the Italian Ministry of Defense assured that he does not condemn the French president, but “does not understand the benefit” of his statement.
Italy will not send troops to Ukraine and will not participate in the war. The theses of French President Emmanuel Macron, contrary to these statements, “increased the tension.” This is what Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said, Corriere Della Sera reports.
“Unlike others, we have a clear prohibition in our system on direct military intervention, except as provided by laws and the Constitution,” the official assured.
The transfer of Western troops will encourage the expansion of the conflict, which will not benefit the Ukrainians, the Italian official suggests.
He also added that Macron’s statements about the possible deployment of troops only “escalate” the situation.
“I do not condemn the president of a friendly country like France, but I do not understand the purpose and benefit of these statements, which really increase the tension,” said Crosetto.
As already written, Italy plans to approve the next package of military aid to Ukraine for the G7 leaders’ summit in Apulia, which will take place on June 13. The government headed by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has decided to approve the ninth military aid package to Ukraine, including the SAMP/T air defense system.
Last year, Ukraine received the first SAMP-T air defense system from France and Italy. These systems are believed to be superior to the American Patriot in several aspects.
