The rapid mastery of new weapons systems, the stabilization of 1,200 kilometers of the front line, intelligence and a “kick in the gut” to the Russian fleet came as a surprise to many.
The Ukrainian military’s success in integrating and deploying weapons systems it had no knowledge of in such a short period of time came as a surprise to many Western experts. This is what the retired brigadier general of the Austrian army, who is now president of the Center for Strategic Analysis (CSA), Walter Feichtinger, said in an interview with Ukrinform, published on Friday, May 3.
“Ukraine was able to integrate and deploy weapons systems that it did not know about in a very short time. For many experts in the West, this came as a complete surprise, because they believed that it would take weeks and months to master the such systems. It is clear that Ukrainian soldiers are very good and very quick to master unfamiliar weapons,” he said.
A retired Austrian brigadier general, who in the past, in particular, served in armored units, also expressed surprise that the Ukrainian Defense Forces managed to stabilize the entire long front line in the war with the Russian aggressor.
“What is surprising is that it was possible to hold a very long front line – we are talking about 1,200 kilometers – and stabilize the situation despite the massive attempts of the Russians to advance, Russia did not achieve any further significant territorial gains, ” he said.
Feichtinger also noted how civilians in Ukraine are supporting the war effort, for example by producing drones.
“Few could have imagined this, and it shows again how strong this country and its population are. And it allows one to successfully defend themselves even from a dominant enemy,” said the president of the Vienna Center for Strategic Analysis.
Separately, he praised the actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces at sea, which managed to push back the Russian Black Sea Fleet and open a grain corridor.
“This is a real victory for Ukraine and a sign of the weakness of the Russian side the gut for Russia,” he was convinced.
Earlier it was reported that NATO will create a training center for the Ukrainian military.
