Justin Trudeau says the Indian government may be involved in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada last year.
A major diplomatic row has emerged between Canada and India after three Indian citizens were jailed in Canada for killing a Sikh separatist leader in Vancouver. The BBC reported this on Friday, May 3.
It was noted that 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar was gunned down by masked gunmen in a busy parking lot in suburban Vancouver in June last year.
The diplomatic row escalated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Indian government may be involved in the crime.
The Indian men arrested are between 22 and 28 years old, live in Edmonton, Alberta, and have been in Canada for the past 3 to 5 years.
Canadian police said the investigation into the murder and murder plot was also looking into “links to the Indian government.”
“Special and transparent investigations are ongoing in these matters, certainly not limited to the involvement of the people arrested today,” said Assistant Commissioner David Tebul.
Canadian investigators worked with colleagues from India, but, according to them, the collaboration was “quite difficult and complicated.”
Police said more people could be involved in the killing and more arrests or charges could be filed.
It was earlier reported that India is demanding that Canada recall dozens of diplomats.
