The German Foreign Minister believes that the strengthening of the European Union is due to the membership of new states.
The European Union needs a new security policy amid Russia’s widespread aggression in Ukraine. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock announced this on Wednesday, May 1, during a visit to Poland, Die Zeit reports.
“Europe should be a security union. We can no longer afford gray areas in Europe,” Baerbock said.
He noted that the integration of ten states into the European Union 20 years ago brought benefits to the entire Union, and now it is necessary to admit EU countries that also want to be “part of the union of freedom and peace.”
“Ultimately, it is about protecting peace and security for millions of Europeans,” the minister concluded.
It is known that the European Council at the summit in Brussels on June 23, 2022 granted Ukraine EU candidate status. Kyiv must implement several important reforms, particularly related to the rule of law, oligarchs and corruption.
Earlier, the Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis called it unlikely that the procedure for Ukraine’s entry into the EU will begin in the next 3-5 years.
And Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid believes that in order to be ready for membership in the European Union, Ukraine has “another 20 years of work.”
