During a protest against the law on “foreign agents” in the center of Tbilisi, clashes took place between law enforcement officers and protesters.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili appealed to Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri to stop dispersing a peaceful demonstration that gathered under the parliament building and opposed the adoption of the law on “foreign agents.” It published a corresponding statement on Tuesday, April 30, on its Facebook page.

He said the demonstration did not pose a threat to public order.

The head of the country put the responsibility for what is happening in Georgia on the government.

“A completely unjustified, unprovoked and disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters in Tbilisi is in line with the government.

Police reportedly used tear gas and water cannons and began pushing protesters away from the entrances to Parliament to allow government deputies to exit the building. At least 20 people required medical attention.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said the protest action by protesters on Rustaveli Avenue near the parliament building in Tbilisi “exceeded the limits established by law on freedom of speech and peaceful assembly and turned violent.”

Georgia may have trouble joining the European Union due to the adoption of a scandalous bill on foreign agents. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
