The US Air Force has ordered a new “doomsday plane” to replace an older model. This was reported by Reuters on Saturday, April 27, citing a statement from the US Air Force.
It was noted that the contract was concluded with Sierra Nevada Corporation for $13 billion.
Production of the new aircraft is expected to end in 2036. At the same time, the older E-4B doomsday planes will reach the end of their service life in the early 2030s.
The E-4B is called the “Doomsday Plane” because it was designed to withstand nuclear explosions and electromagnetic effects. An airliner is a type of mobile command post and is often used as transportation for the US Secretary of Defense.
These aircraft are capable of mid-air refueling and have conference and briefing rooms inside, as well as modern communication equipment.
The US Air Force currently operates four of these aircraft, and at least one of them remains operational at all times. The new aircraft, planned to replace the aging E-4B, will be based on a commercial jet modified to meet military requirements.
