Several dozen special forces troops stationed in Chad as planners and advisers will now move to Germany.
The United States has said it plans to withdraw its troops from Chad. Reuters reported this on Thursday, April 25.
Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder said the move was a “temporary measure” as part of a review of security cooperation with Chad due to continue after the country’s May 6 presidential election.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said several dozen special forces troops stationed in Chad as planners and advisers would be transferred to Germany by now.
Chad’s interim President Mahamat Idriss Déby is running in elections next month, which will make Chad the first country in West and Central Africa led by a junta to organize a vote.
Until now, this large Central African country has been the main partner of Western countries in the joint fight against the Islamist movement in West Africa.
At the same time, France still maintains about a thousand soldiers and several military aircraft at an air base in Chad.
The Chadian army stopped and disarmed a group of 320 Sudanese soldiers who invaded the country.
