The law provides for the application to be banned in the United States if after 270 days it is still owned by the Chinese company ByteDance Group.
US President Joe Biden on Wednesday, April 24, signed a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok, CNN reports.
This provision was included in the bill providing foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
At the same time, the law itself does not provide for immediate blocking of TikTok.
The law signed by Biden gives TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, 270 days to sell the platform. If this does not happen, TikTok will be banned from US app stores and online hosting services that support it.
The initiators explained the decision with security reasons and fears that thanks to TikTok, China is gaining access to American data.
TikTok has responded to the law, calling it “unconstitutional” because it would “destroy” the platform’s 170 million US users and 7 million companies that work with the application.
We remind you that on April 23, 79 members of the US Senate voted for this bill.
By the way, the topic of blocking TikTok is also being discussed in Ukraine. It was actively promoted by the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn. On April 1, the People’s Deputy said that the ban on use could become a reality in Ukraine if the blocking of TikTok is approved in the United States.
