Of the 15 countries, only Russia opposed the document, which calls on all countries not to develop or deploy nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in space.
Russia on Wednesday, April 24, vetoed a UN resolution calling on all nations to stop a dangerous nuclear arms race in space, AP reports.
It was noted that the resolution was initiated by the United States and Japan.
13 out of 15 countries voted for this resolution. Only Russia opposed it, and China abstained.
The resolution calls on all countries not to develop or deploy nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in space, as prohibited by a 1967 international treaty.
After the vote, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin had said that Moscow did not intend to put nuclear weapons in space.
“Today’s veto begs the question: why? If you follow the rules, why don’t you support a resolution that confirms them? What can you hide? It’s strange. And it’s shameful,” said the spokesperson of US.
In this regard, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, called the resolution “absolutely absurd and political” and said that it does not go far enough in banning all types of weapons in space.
Earlier it became known that Russia, together with China, planned to put a nuclear power plant on the Moon. It is planned to automatically deliver it to the Earth satellite, Roscosmos said.
