In the upper house of Congress, 80 senators supported the motion of Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to “end the debate,” allowing the adoption of a legislative package with the help of Ukraine through an abbreviated procedure.
Before that, Republican Senator Mike Lee introduced an amendment that could have delayed consideration of the bill, but it was rejected by a simple majority.
The Senate will then continue its discussion and final vote, which requires only 50 votes.
This decision begins a 30-hour speaking period for senators, in which one senator can speak for up to 1 hour. The actual length of the filibuster will depend on the number of senators participating. This will open up the possibility of a final vote on the bill.
Other foreign aid bills – Israel, Taiwan, and a package ranging from a TikTok ban to the sale of Russian sovereign assets to Ukraine – also passed the threshold required for a vote in the Senate. The US President expressed his readiness to sign them all.
