A 72-year-old man from the Netherlands who was infected with the coronavirus and suffered from the infection for 613 days has died. During the entire period of the disease, the virus mutated in the patient’s body 50 times. Bild reported it.
The pensioner also suffered from a bone marrow disease that affected his stem cells and red blood cells and then turned into leukemia. He was forced to take immunosuppressants. They weaken the immune system, which cannot produce antibodies against the virus.
The husband was infected with the Omicron variant BA.1.17 in February 2022 and was treated at the University Hospital of Amsterdam. Despite several COVID-19 vaccines, the patient did not develop antibodies.
The researchers found that the virus developed a resistance mutation just 21 days after taking the drug Sotrovimab. Thus, the virus quickly adapts to the active ingredient to fight it.
The virus in the man’s body mutated almost 50 times. The case highlights the potential of the coronavirus if it stays in the body for too long and can multiply over and over again. An illness duration of 613 days is not unusual.
As we wrote earlier, the incidence of ARVI, influenza and COVID-19 is decreasing in Ukraine.
