The additional military advisers will not have a combat role, but will advise and support the Ukrainian authorities and army.
The United States is considering sending additional military advisers to the embassy in Kyiv, proof of America’s commitment to Ukraine. Politico reported this on Saturday, April 20, citing a statement from the Pentagon.
According to Pentagon Speaker Patrick Ryder, the advisers will not play a combat role, but will advise and support the Ukrainian government and armed forces.
“Throughout this conflict, the Department of Defense has reviewed and adjusted the US presence in Ukraine as security conditions have changed. We are currently considering sending some additional advisers to strengthen the Office of Defense Defense (ODC) of the Embassy,” Ryder said in a statement.
He added that the Directorate conducts various non-combat advisory and support missions.
“The Office of Defense Cooperation is staffed exclusively by the Department of Defense and is embedded within the US Embassy, reporting to the Chief of Mission, just like any other Embassy,” Ryder said.
However, the number of personnel in the ODC was not disclosed for security reasons.
Meanwhile, anonymous sources told Politico that the agency’s mission is to track weapons shipped to the United States by Ukraine.
“The additional troops will support logistics efforts and the handling of weapons that the United States is sending to Ukraine. The new contingent will also assist the Ukrainian military in maintaining weapons,” the sources said.
Two US officials said the ODC will provide security for the embassy. Their number can reach 60.
We remind you that on Saturday the US House of Representatives passed a bill to provide nearly $61 billion in aid to Ukraine. Most of this amount will go to military support.
Earlier, the media reported that the Pentagon was preparing weapons to be sent to Ukraine. Some equipment can reach the battlefield within days.
