The “Ukrainian” package provides for the allocation of approximately $61 billion in aid to Ukraine and its allies. The final vote on the bills must take place by Saturday evening, April 20.
House Democrats lined up to support Speaker Mike Johnson’s plan and cast votes to approve bills with more aid for Ukraine and Israel. Bloomberg wrote this on Thursday, April 18.
“We will do everything to get this national security bill to the finish line. This is not Johnson’s foreign aid package. This is America’s foreign aid package in terms of meeting our national security needs,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
The publication points out that Speaker Johnson will need Democratic votes to pass the bill after far-right House Republicans said they would vote against procedural measures to open debate on it.
Democrats could also help Johnson keep his job, which was under threat over his decision to allow a vote on aid to Ukraine without tying it to US border security provisions
Johnson has previously said he did not seek help from Democrats and was willing to risk his job to help Ukraine fend off Russian aggression.
We remind you that Michael Johnson said that the voting on bills containing aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan will take place on Saturday, April 20.
Johnson had previously consulted with former President Donald Trump. After the meeting, Trump made it clear that he had no objection to approving aid to Ukraine, but only as a loan.
