The control of the Russian occupation forces at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the operation of the power plant by unqualified personnel, exacerbates the security risks of a large nuclear facility.
Representatives of the EU, US and Ukraine blamed the incidents at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant on Russia, which occupied the nuclear facility. This was mentioned in their speeches at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, April 15, Ukrinform reports.
It was noted that in the statement of the countries of the European Union, Ukraine and other European states, which was read at a meeting of the UN Security Council by the permanent representative of the EU to the UN Stavros Lambrinidis, it was noted that the Russian Federation bears full responsibility for the dangers to the nuclear safety it is creating at the seized Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
The Permanent Representative of the EU recalled that for the first time a country that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council illegally seized a nuclear power plant of one of its neighbors.
US Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization Robert Wood said that Russian occupation forces’ control of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, as well as the operation of the power plant by unqualified personnel, exacerbated the risks on the security of a large nuclear facility in Ukraine.
The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Sergei Kislitsa, said that the Russian Federation is trying to blame Ukraine for the attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in the hope of removing the issue of de-occupation of the plant from the agenda .
“The sole root of all nuclear safety risks is Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggressive war against Ukraine,” Kislitsa emphasized.
He noted that what happened at Zaporizhia NPP on April 7 and 9 and after that was a well-planned operation under a false flag on the part of the Russian Federation. According to the permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN, the attack aims to shift the focus from the aforementioned root cause and the only way to eliminate all threats to nuclear and nuclear security, especially the de-occupation of the plant.
He said Moscow wanted to “feed the world the narrative that nuclear reactors, whose protection is designed to withstand the strongest impacts, were attacked by low-power, short-range drones” designed to destroy infantry and small cars at a distance of several kilometers.
Restricting the militarization of the station and surrounding occupied territories remains part of Russia’s military strategy, he said. Moscow uses them as cover for artillery strikes on territories and settlements on the other side of the Dnieper, the permanent representative said.
Recently, new footage of Russian soldiers and military equipment in the corridors of power units appeared on social networks, he added.
Russia’s violations included planting antipersonnel mines around the perimeter of the plant, blocking legitimate management and personnel from entering the facility, cutting automated data transmission from the radiation monitoring system, and failing to provide timely and complete maintenance.
Ukraine, according to Kislitsa, categorically rejects the “crazy accusations” that it could cause a nuclear disaster.
As we have already written, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced three direct hits on the protective structures of the main reactor of the Zaporizhia NPP. Rosatom has traditionally blamed the Ukrainian military for the strike, reporting injuries during the “strike.”
