Since the beginning of 2024, 7,888 cases of whooping cough have been recorded in the Czech Republic, of which 1,494 were reported last week.
The whooping cough epidemic continues in the Czech Republic at levels last recorded in the late 1950s. This was reported by the Czech State Institute of Public Health on Monday, April 15.
The Czech Republic has recorded 7,888 cases of whooping cough since the start of the year, with 1,494 reported last week, the fastest weekly increase in months. Often the disease is noticed in young people.
This year, three patients died of whooping cough: a 62-year-old man, an 84-year-old woman and a newborn. All have other health problems.
About 183 people in the Czech Republic are in the hospital due to complications from whooping cough. This is the worst number since 1959, when vaccination against the disease began in the Czech Republic. Although vaccination against whooping cough is mandatory in the Czech Republic, it does not guarantee survival, and some people refuse it.
We remind you that since the beginning of 2023, the number of whooping cough cases has increased significantly in Ukraine. There were 515 cases of the disease in the first two months of 2024, higher than last year when only 27 cases were reported in the same period.
