Nearly one hundred members of the US Congress from both parties made an open appeal to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
More than 90 members of the US House of Representatives, representing both parties, made an open call on Speaker Mike Johnson to immediately introduce the Senate-passed Ukraine and Israel relief bill. The text of the letter was published on his official page by one of the signatories, Congressman Josh Hottheimer.
“This weekend, the Iranian regime launched hundreds of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles directly at our main democratic ally in the Middle East, Israel. Time is of the essence, and we must ensure that the necessary assistance is delivered to Israel and our other democratic allies who face threats from our adversaries around the world,” the document said.
In this context, the letter calls on the Speaker to “bring the additional funding package passed by the Senate to the floor for an immediate vote.”
Lawmakers emphasized that the bill has overwhelming bipartisan support of 70 out of 100 votes in the Senate. If it is introduced in the lower house on Monday, it can go to the president for signature in the evening of the same day.
As you know, on February 13, the US Senate supported a package that provides more than $60 billion for Ukraine, mainly for military aid. But the Senate’s decision is not enough to allocate money – the bill must pass the House of Representatives, which is in no hurry to consider it due to pressure from former President Donald Trump.
House Speaker Mike Johnson met with Trump on Friday. As a result of the meeting, Trump said that he had no objection to approving aid to Ukraine, but only in the form of a loan.
