Experts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) write about this in their latest report.
Iran’s strikes on Israel were similar to recent strikes on Ukraine – Russian forces regularly carry out large combined attacks using cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and drones.
However, the Iranian strike was much less successful than recent Russian attacks on Ukraine – Israeli air defense systems intercepted almost all of the approximately 320 air targets, with the exception of a few ballistic missiles.
Iranian drones and missiles had to cross more than a thousand kilometers of airspace in Iraq, Syria and Jordan, giving Israel and its allies several hours to identify, track and intercept targets.
Russian forces are launching drones and missiles from occupied Ukrainian and Russian territory, giving Ukrainian air defenses only a fraction of the time Israel used to successfully repel the attack.
Israel also has a powerful air defense system, while the Ukrainian air defense system’s ability to defend against attacks across the wider frontline continues to dwindle.
Ukraine does not have the ability to conduct air-to-air interception, as Israel and its allies did, and Ukraine’s large territory complicates the task of creating a dense air defense system, especially against the backdrop of delays in the provision of military assistance from the United States, ISW concludes.
The US shot down 80 drones and 6 ballistic missiles that Iran and Yemen launched at Israel on April 13 and 14. At least one missile and 7 drones were destroyed before they were launched into Yemen.
Most of the targets were shot down over Iraq and Jordan. Britain and France also helped repel the massive attack on Israel.
